Don’t eat carbs after 7pm.
Don’t text him back too quickly.
Don’t ever leave a job until you have a new one.
Don’t let your kids have candy.
Don’t sleep in.
Don’t go two days without a workout.
I don’t know about you, but rules make me want to jump out of my skin.
Maybe it’s because I spent way too many years following them, or maybe it’s because I now know how too many rules can squash your soul.
I’m not into my soul feeling squashed. Our souls should be LEADING our lives, not being left in the dust by our mind buying into so. many. rules. and “shoulds”.
Let’s take a look at a particular area where I tend to despise rules: FOOD.
There is no way I would be sitting here helping hundreds of women heal their relationship with food if I had listened to one more freakin’ person, magazine, or book telling me how and what I should be eating. I spent 10 years buying into other people’s’ plans and ideas for what to do with my body, and it wasn’t until I finally said “enough is enough” and learned to tap into my own internal wealth of intuitive knowledge that I got to the other side of my food problem.
And thank god I did because, as many of you know, putting your power in the hands of someone else telling you what to do is absolutely no fun at all. It leads to incredibly low self-esteem, fighting food every day, and a soul that feels hidden and diminished.
Part of truly, deeply taking care of yourself means breaking the “rules” and instead, creating your own. This is what it looks like to actually get to know yourself and love yourself enough to say, “I choose my way”. (click to tweet)
The essence of what I do as a coach is help women tap into who they really are. Who are they underneath all those rules? All those things they think they should be doing? What does the deep down powerful, lit up, clear, empowered part of them truly want?
When we can peel off all the layers of rules and shoulds, we find the essence – the beauty- of who we really are.
We start to trust ourselves.
We eat what we want to eat and trust that our bodies know what they’re doing.
We run our businesses that way WE want to, not the way everyone else does.
We text that guy back if and when we feel like it, knowing that by following our gut, we’re bringing our true self to the table and that’s our only job.
We raise our kids and manage our household in a way that feels good and loving for US, not anyone else.
I can’t tell you how freeing it feels every time I travel further and further away from rules I’m holding onto and closer to my true self. And I’ve seen first hand the impact this same journey has had for so many women.

What rules are you consciously or subconsciously buying into in your life? If you could choose one area of your life that you feel like you need to start breaking some rules and instead doing things your way (ie. dating, food, business, etc.), what would it be? What’s the rule you need to break? How would you do it differently if you were to trust yourself instead?
